Keywords are a key component of every good marketing strategy. Without them, you could have the best product in the world and never be found by the people seeking what you have to offer.

Keywords improve your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and help search engines understand what type of content is on the page so that they can rank the best content highest.

Keywords are used on virtually every platform online from social media and images to blogs and product pages.

Selecting the right keywords is important and will heavily impact how well your content ranks.

How to Find SEO Keywords

Researching keywords can feel intimidating because you want to choose the right word or phrase. While a lot of what keyword research entails is pretty straightforward, there are ways of improving your research skills to ensure you are selecting the most beneficial word or phrase for your particular situation.

First, you’ll want to determine what your primary keyword is. Think about the content, website page, or social media post you are writing. What word or phrase is most closely associated with it?

Comparing different words and phrases using keyword research tools will help you determine which word will help you rank highest on a search engine.

There are four types of keywords to keep in mind:

  • Informational Keywords
  • Commercial Keywords
  • Navigational Keywords
  • Transactional Keywords

Be sure that the search intent or user intent matches the content that you are writing. For example, if you’ve selected a keyword phrase with the hopes of driving traffic to your website for sales, but when you type the phrase into a search engine you’re met with informational content—you may need to rethink your keyword phrase.

Our Favorite Keyword Research Tools

Keyword research tools are helpful when trying to understand your audience and the type of content they are searching for. While it is easy to get a ballpark idea of what type of content you should be creating, having the ability to analyze the data will give you the information you need to write the best copy, blogs, and posts possible.

A good keyword tool will provide you with the keyword difficulty (how likely you are to rank higher using that word) and volume (how many searches your keyword gets per month).

A helpful guide to follow is to choose words below 70 for keyword difficulty and between 100-1,000 for volume.

There are many great keyword research tools available. Here are a few of our favorites:
